Even if you like PVE, PVP is inevitable at this game. Massive PVP will be a struggle for you, but in 1VS1 at late game you will be unbeatable. Paladins are extremely useful for high lvl raids (Ant queen, Baium etc).
If you choose Paladin, I think that you will be able to find a good clan later in the game (after 40-50lvl) in comparison with the other tanks. Take into account that progression with any kind of tanks will be slow - prepare for a struggle. Regarding tanks, I highly recommend you to go with Paladin. P.S.: By the way, I like to play tanks, I don't know if Paladin or Dark Avenger would be a good option, if not maybe Blade dancer or Swordsinger would be a better option similar to a tank?
